This was sucky news to wake up to. Jimmy Buffett’s family announced that the pirate has passed away at age 76. The iconic singer of “Margaritaville,” “Come Monday,” and my personal favorite “Why Don’t We Get Drunk” left this life surrounded by his family, friends, music, and dogs. “He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by many.”
Some of you youngbloods may not be familiar, but if you’ve ever blown off work because “it was 5 o’clock somewhere,” thank Jimmy. His music brought the party for generations and generations. Jimmy is the soundtrack to garage beers and day drinking, lounging around at the beach, relaxing out in the ocean, and otherwise enjoying life.
That’s what Jimmy Buffett’s greatest hits album basically is. It’s the soundtrack to enjoying life. It’s why you never saw him without a smile on his face. Why would you? He spent the last fifty-three years touring the world in flip-flops and Hawaiian shirts, sharing his music with everyone and putting a smile on their faces.
And, of course, there’s the iconic Eric Cartman line.
Louder with Crowder Dot Com website readers have been sharing their memories of what Buffett and his music meant to them.
It’s Saturday and I was planning on drinking anyway. Though now it will be while listening to “A Pirate Looks at 40.”
