Outrage Burns Over Ilhan Omar Statement: ‘Somalian First. Muslim Second. She Never Mentions America.’

Sometimes politicians just need to be honest with their constituents and directly express what’s on their agenda.

And Rep. Ilhan Omar did just that as she was heard in a speech captured on video speaking to those from Somalia, the country where she was born and fled when she came to the U.S. with her family as refugees.

The Minnesota Democrat spoke about Somaliland to an audience reportedly at a Minneapolis hotel as she expressed her loyalty to them and her homeland.

The video posted to X included translated captions which have not been verified. However, Omar responded in comments to the post after igniting backlash and did not seem to challenge its authenticity.

The video was posted by Ambassador Rhoda J. Elmi, the Deputy Foreign Minister of Somalia’s breakaway region of Somaliland, which has not been internationally recognized.

Omar vowed to continue representing the interests of  Somali Americans and said that the “U.S. will do what we want and nothing else.”

“There are areas of friction and that led us to kill each other, but in reality, we are an organized society, brothers and sisters, people of the same blood, people who know they are Somalians first, Muslims second, who protect one another, come to each other’s aid and to the aid of other Muslims too,” the Muslim lawmaker and far-left ‘Squad’ member purportedly said.

“The U.S. would not dare support anyone against Somalia to steal our land or oceans. Sleep in comfort, knowing I am here to protect the interests of Somalia from inside the U.S. system. The woman you sent to Congress is working day and night to protect your interests. She knows your plight and that of Somalia. I am as concerned about Somalia as you guys are. Together, we will protect the interests of Somalia,” she added.

Referring to “ethnic Somalis,” she reportedly declared that their “land can not be divided” and vowed to ” liberate the occupied territories stolen from Somalia.”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene was among the many who expressed outrage at Omar’s remarks.

Many online agreed and called for Omar’s removal from Congress.

Omar responded to the controversy in the comments on X.

“It’s not only slanted but completely off, but I wouldn’t expect more from these propagandists,” she wrote.

“Somalis in Somalia and in the diaspora are united in that effort and I stand in solidarity with them,” she added. “No amount of harassment and lies will ever change that.”
