Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has made the decision to seek a 20th term in the U.S. House of Representatives, announcing her intention to run for reelection in 2024.
Pelosi, at the age of 83, declared her candidacy for California’s 11th Congressional District, which represents San Francisco, through a post on X, previously known as Twitter.
“Now more than ever our City needs us to advance San Francisco values and further our recovery. Our country needs America to show the world that our flag is still there, with liberty and justice for ALL,” Pelosi said. “That is why I am running for reelection — and respectfully ask for your vote.”

Pelosi relinquished her role as the leader of the House Democratic caucus last year. She handed over the leadership to the current House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Despite her step down, Democratic lawmakers have honored her with the title “Speaker Emerita” in recognition of her service spanning over 35 years in the House.
Pelosi’s political journey began with her election to Congress in 1987. She etched her name in history by becoming the first female speaker in 2007. Her leadership saw her reclaim the speaker’s gavel in 2019. Under her guidance, the Democratic Party witnessed significant legislative victories, notably the passage of the Affordable Care Act.
However, her tenure was not without challenges, as she navigated the party through the tumultuous waters of two impeachments of former President Donald Trump. To this day, Pelosi remains a polarizing figure, with critics on her own party’s far left as well as widespread unpopularity among the American right.
