Local news channel KTLA-5 reported:
“Once again, the Santa Ana City Council is thinking about a plan that would let noncitizens vote in local elections.”
“Proponents claim that the city’s significant noncitizen population, including people who have entered the country illegally, should be given a say in local issues since they frequently pay taxes and help the economy.”
“Others, on the other hand, don’t agree with the idea. They think that only citizens should be able to vote.”
On the grounds that it was against the state constitution, a local judge last year invalidated San Francisco’s attempt to let non-citizens cast ballots in school board elections.
Additionally, a New York state judge invalidated a law in the city of New York this past year that would’ve granted municipal voting privileges to a million non-citizen residents.
In recent months, a number of states have made it abundantly clear that only U.S. citizens can vote.
