An early-morning explosion inside a historic building on Harvard Medical School’s campus has been ruled intentional by investigators. No one was injured, but law enforcement is urgently seeking two suspects captured on surveillance footage fleeing the scene.
The incident unfolded just before 3 a.m. on Saturday, November 2, when a Harvard University Police Department (HUPD) officer responded to a fire alarm at the Goldenson Building, located at 220 Longwood Avenue. Upon arrival, the officer spotted two individuals running from the structure. Despite attempts to stop them, the suspects escaped. Moments later, the officer discovered evidence of an explosion on the fourth floor.
The Boston Fire Department’s Arson Unit quickly determined the blast was deliberate. Boston Police swept the building for secondary devices but found none. The FBI has joined the multi-agency investigation, though a spokesperson declined to comment further, deferring to HUPD.
Surveillance images released by Harvard show the two suspects inside the building with their faces covered. Authorities are asking the public for help identifying them and have provided a tip line: (617) 495-1796.
“It was like I felt it in my body,” said nearby resident Joey Awad, who was jolted awake by the noise. “I heard a bang, got really scared—my heart was racing. Then, about five minutes later, another bang.”
Built in 1906, the Isabelle and Leonard H. Goldenson Biomedical Research Building houses key research departments, including Neurobiology, along with classrooms and administrative offices. It stands as one of several historic structures surrounding the HMS Quad Lawn.
Students expressed shock at the rare act of violence on campus. “I didn’t think that would ever happen,” said Taylor Perry, a second-year student in Boston. “I’ve never heard of anything like this.”
As the investigation continues, law enforcement emphasizes that the motive remains unclear. Anyone with information is urged to contact HUPD detectives immediately.
