Former Trump Attorney General William Barr said that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg indicted former President Donald Trump because he believes it will help Trump win the Republican Party nomination in 2024 so that he can lose in the general election.
Trump has been indicted on 34 felony counts over his alleged hush money payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal.
The former president was arrested on Tuesday after surrendering himself to the Manhattan district attorney’s office to face the nearly three dozen felony charges.
Barr said that the indictment is “the archetypal abuse of the prosecutorial function to engage in a political hit job, and it’s a disgrace.”
“Politically, it’s gonna be damaging, I think, to the Republican Party simply because I think it’s a no-lose situation for the Democrats,” Barr continued. “I think the impetus is really to help Trump get the nomination, focus the attention on him for two years, have this thing swirling around, plus whatever else comes, which I think will be damaging to whoever gets the nomination.”
“And legally, I think it’s, from what I understand, it’s a pathetically weak case,” he added.
